Appeals Information - August 2022
We hope that you have had an enjoyable summer break and that the SQA exam results you received this morning are what you had hoped for and are in line with, or better, than what had been estimated by your teachers.

Please don't panic if any of your grades don't seem right or you did not perform as well as your estimates indicated, you may be able to appeal and we are already working on the information we have for you to see if you are eligible.
The appeals service is free, and you are able to appeal to SQA yourself or through the school from today - Tuesday 9 August.
There's detailed information on who is eligible on page 3 of the SQA booklet below:
https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/files_ccc/SQA-Appeals-2022-guidance-for-learners.pdf (opens new window)
Please be aware that if you have not achieved your estimated grade, then we will put in an appeal on your behalf. However, we ask that you speak to your class teacher, or the Faculty Head, on your return to school to confirm that you wish an appeal to be submitted on your behalf. It is much easier for us to coordinate all appeals centrally and easier for you to speak to staff to discuss whether an appeal is appropriate prior to an appeal being submitted.
We will be able to advise you if an appeal is in your best interests. However, the final decision on whether to submit an appeal is yours.
Who can appeal?
An appeal can be submitted if you feel you underperformed on the day of your exam.
However, you must meet the following criteria:
- Your estimate must be higher than the grade shown on your certificate. For example, if the grade shown on your certificate is a C, your estimate must have been an A or a B. If your estimate is not at least a grade higher than your SQA award then an appeal cannot be submitted.
- We must have submitted an estimate to SQA for the subject and level you are appealing. This will be shown on your estimate tracking report issued in April. If you do not have this the information see Mr Shankland on your return.
- You must have taken and/or submitted all SQA coursework and formal assessments, including exams.
- Your course must include at least one assessment that is marked by SQA.
- Please note that National 5 Practical Woodworking is not eligible for appeal as this is assessed in school.
Examination Exceptional Circumstances Consideration Service
If you have submitted an Examination Exceptional Circumstances Consideration Service (EECCS) request (this is usually due to illness on the day of the exam) and this has been accepted and reviewed, and an award has been made, you are not eligible to use the appeals service. This is because the EECCS already includes a review of your alternative evidence. Please speak to Mr Shankland if you would like to appeal a grade awarded under EECCS
Priority Appeals
If you require an appeal to secure a place at college or university then this must be submitted by yourself by Tuesday 16th August or by us by the 19th August.
All other appeals can be submitted by yourself until the 30th August and by us by 2nd September.
As previously stated, if you have not achieved your estimated grade then we will put in an appeal on your behalf.
Submitting an Appeal Yourself
You or your parent/carer will be able to submit an appeal directly to SQA.
More information on how to do this will be issued by SQA on Results Day. We would still advise speaking to ourselves if you intend to submit a direct appeal, to get our advice and guidance. You can do this on your return to school on Tuesday the 16th August.
The Appeals service opens on Tuesday 9 August at 9 am, but don't worry, this is not a first come first served service and all appeals submitted by the correct date will be dealt with by SQA.
You will be asked for the following information to register:
- your name
- your date of birth
- your Scottish Candidate Number (you can find this on your certificate)
- the subject and the level of the course
- whether you are waiting for a result for a university or college place or for an employment or training programme — if so, your request will be processed as part of the priority appeal service
Once registered, you can:
- submit an appeal
- withdraw an appeal if you change your mind
If you wish to submit an appeal yourself, the deadlines are as follows:
- Priority appeals - Tuesday 16 August at 11.59 pm
- All other appeals - Tuesday 30 August at 11.59 pm
Remember, we're here for you and will help you sort any issues on the 16th. See you then.
