Holocaust Memorial Day

27th January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. However, the day is also to remember the subsequent Genocides which have taken place since the Holocaust in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. This year's theme was 'How can life go on?' and  the event included readings about those affected by the Holocaust, the screening of a feature film on a survivor's story and contributions from West Lothian secondary school pupils as they shared their experience of visiting Auschwitz.  The ceremony came to a close with a prayer and pupils were asked to lay a pebble at a memorial tree which is a Jewish tradition to symbolise remembrance.
