Immunisations in Secondary Schools during 2024
In the coming months, there will be vaccinations taking place in school for pupils in S1 and S3.
Booster Programmes for S3 Pupils
The S3 programme for Teen Booster (Td/IPV booster) and meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) vaccinations will take place on 21st February 2024.
The Td/IPV booster is offered to teenagers and completes the course of childhood vaccines providing protection against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. The Meningitis vaccine protects against meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by 4 strains of meningococcal bacteria and is offered at an age when teens are at most risk of infection.
It is important that parents / carers of pupils in S3 complete the consent forms for this vaccination and that they are returned to the School Office as soon as possible.
HPV Vaccination Programme for S1 Pupils
HPV vaccination will be offered to all pupils in S1. The vaccine prevents infection with HPV (human papillomavirus) and helps protects against certain cancers. Most people will only need one dose of the vaccine. Some pupils may require further doses if the young person is immunocompromised - however, this can be discussed with the vaccinating nurses and arrangements for will be made for future doses to be administered in the school setting.
Consent forms will be issued to pupils during January 2024 and it is important that once received, that parents / carers complete the forms and return them to the School Office as soon as possible.
