Charity

Formed in 2014, Whitburn Academy's S6 Community and Charity committee is a voluntary group for S6 pupils to help to raise awareness and funds for a variety of charities.

Over the course of the school session, the committee organises a range of events, some of which are held annually across the school.   These events have made a significant amount of money for a variety of worthwhile causes since the group was formed. Here are just a few of our fundraising activities:

MacMillan Coffee Morning

At morning break on the last Friday in September, we hold a staff coffee morning and pupil bake sale.   Funds raised from the coffee morning are donated to MacMillan Cancer Support.

Children in Need Fundraiser

On the third Friday in November, we hold a Non Uniform Day to raise funds for Children In Need.   Pupils and Staff pay £1 to wear non-uniform clothes for the day.   During morning break, there is a cake sale and face painting for pupils in the foyer.   For Staff, there are bacon rolls served by members of the committee (for a small fee / donation) and a raffle / prize draw is held in the staff room.

Shoebox appeal

During October and November, we participate in the Blythswood Care Shoebox appeal.   This involves pupils from all year groups bringing in toiletries, coloured pens and pencils, a small toy etc to help to fill up a shoebox with essentials as a Christmas present for a child in Ukraine or Eastern Europe.   Through the generosity of our pupils and staff, we usually manage to fill over 50 shoeboxes.

Help Week

Our main annual fundraiser is Help Week.   Help week is held on the last three days of term prior to the Christmas Holidays.

  • Day 1 of Help Week features the Christmas Fayre.   This is organised and run by the Personal Development classes.   The fayre includes a number of different stalls including tombolas, cake and craft stalls: with all the products made by the pupils  and face painting.  Pupils from all year groups attend the fayre during the day and their contributions help to raise money towards our chosen charities.
  • Days 2 and 3 are non uniform days, where pupils and staff pay £1 to dress down.   Normal classes are suspended for the final two days and activities are laid on all over the school for pupils to get involved in.   These include Movie Marathons, board games, X box tournaments, crafts and Sports.   The money raised is to be distributed between two - three charities chosen by the pupils.
