Modern Studies

Modern Studies is an exciting, relevant and constantly evolving subject. It prepares them to play an active role in contemporary society by developing a political literacy that will inform decision making.

It aims to empower students to take control of their own lives and make a difference.

Modern Studies supports the raising of standards in core skills such as literacy and numeracy.  A wide range of global, national and local sources are used and analysed, not least the interrogation of mass media outlets such as newspapers, TV and Radio.  Crucial enquiry techniques such as internet research, letter writing, the construction and analysis of attitude surveys, questionnaires and interviews are other key skills that are developed.

"Modern Studies is an exciting subject which provides an excellent overview of the main political institutions and processes in the UK.  In today's ever changing and complex world it provides the analytical tools to hold those in power to account and understand the institutions which shape our lives."

Calum McKay, Journalist
